Ephesus Terrace Houses
The Terrace Houses take the story of Ephesus indoors. Prosperous households arranged rooms around courtyards and used decoration to express taste and social standing. Building on the slope required different levels, making the relationship between neighbouring spaces an important part of the architecture.
Look for painted walls, mosaic floors and surviving heating arrangements. Compare formal reception spaces with smaller rooms. The protective structure and raised walkways reveal a second story: how fragile interiors are studied and conserved after excavation.
Use the designated walkways and never touch decorated surfaces. Study individual rooms rather than treating the remains as one large interior. Entry arrangements can differ from those of the surrounding ancient city; follow current instructions at the entrance.
The residential complex contains seven richly appointed houses arranged on terraces of the slope above Curetes Street. Their Roman occupation involved successive alterations. Peristyle courtyards organised light and room access, while mosaics, painted plaster and marble facing created differentiated interiors. Water installations and heating evidence show that decoration was part of a serviced dwelling rather than an isolated collection of artworks.
Historical framework
The Terrace Houses are a protected residential zone within Ephesus. Their Roman houses were altered through successive phases rather than belonging to one family at a single frozen moment. Courtyards, painting, mosaic, marble and service installations reveal substantial investment in domestic life and display. Modern roofs and walkways are part of the conservation story, not ancient architectural elements.
Courtyard and house plan
Start with a courtyard and follow the relationship of rooms to it. Ask where light enters and how privacy changes between an entrance, reception space and more secluded rooms. This is more revealing than a rapid inventory of decorative styles.
Paint and marble
Compare painted surfaces with stone facing and discuss how households presented themselves to guests. Do not invent an owner or a mythological identification unless the interpretation supports it. Decoration could be repaired, replaced or adapted.
Mosaics
Explain how small pieces create patterns and why viewing distance matters. Compare borders and figurative scenes where visible. These floors once carried everyday movement; their vulnerability now explains barriers and conservation work.
Utilities and protective work
Discuss water and heating only where installations are identified. Conclude with documentation, fragment reassembly and environmental protection: the modern shelter is what makes delicate surfaces available for study.
Suggested narration
Outside we saw what the city said about itself in public. Here we ask how prosperous households shaped a private world. Courtyards organised light and movement; decoration organised social impressions. These were working buildings, altered over time. The modern shelter is not a distraction: it helps explain why vulnerable painting and mosaic remain visible.
Questions visitors ask
Are these ordinary homes for all Ephesians?
No. Their scale and decoration represent prosperous households, not the experience of every resident.
Did rooms always have fixed functions?
Functions and circulation could change. Tie an interpretation to the relevant phase and evidence.
Is the shelter ancient?
No. It is modern protective infrastructure.
Evidence and traditions
Avoid calling a residence imperial without evidence or describing all repaired surfaces as untouched originals. Explain the difference between an original fragment, a reconstruction and a modern support.
Group handling
Check separate admission and access conditions before entry. Steps and elevated walkways can slow circulation. Explain the main plan before a narrow section, then take questions on a wider permitted platform. Do not promise step-free access without checking current arrangements, and keep visitors from leaning over barriers for photographs.
