Ayasuluk & St. John’s Basilica

Ayasuluk Hill brings several periods of Selçuk's history into the same landscape. The Basilica of St John developed around the Christian tradition that the apostle was buried here. Its scale reflects the importance of the place as a centre of worship and pilgrimage.

Trace the outline of the church through walls, columns and open spaces. Distinguish the main interior from the area associated with the tomb tradition. Views over Selçuk help place the basilica among the town's other historic buildings and changing settlement patterns.

Much of the church survives as foundations and partial walls, so use the information panels to imagine its original form. Expect uneven ground and exposed areas. Wear suitable footwear and respect any sections closed for conservation.

The surviving basilica plan is associated with Justinian’s sixth-century building campaign. Its scale and domed arrangement monumentalised a place revered as John’s burial. Baptismal and other liturgical spaces record a wider Christian community rather than just a tomb monument. The Ayasuluk hilltop also carries later defensive and settlement history, explaining why the panorama belongs in the story of Ephesus’ changing centre of gravity.

Historical framework

Ayasuluk Hill offers a later viewpoint than the Roman streets of Ephesus. The monumental basilica associated with Justinian dates to the sixth century and was built over a place venerated as John’s tomb. Later fortification and settlement add Byzantine, Turkish and Ottoman layers. The Johannine tradition of Ephesus must not be confused with John the Baptist simply because Turkish and European names can sound similar.

Hilltop orientation

Locate modern Selçuk and the wider Ephesian landscape. Settlement change reflects geography, defence and religious importance; it is rarely a single, precisely documented overnight move.

Basilica footprint

Trace entrance, crossing and sanctuary before describing missing domes. Visitors need a plan to make sense of isolated columns and foundations. Explain modern re-erection rather than presenting an intact sixth-century interior.

Venerated tomb and baptistery

Distinguish burial tradition from what architecture demonstrates. The baptistery gives a separate starting point for discussing initiation and community life. A place of veneration and an authenticated personal burial are different claims.

Fortress and neighbouring monuments

Where access permits, read fortification as another layer. The basilica, castle and nearby İsa Bey Mosque have different functions and chronologies; do not collapse them into one structure or promise common admission.

Suggested narration

The hill shows that Ephesian history did not end when the grand Roman streets became less important. Memory, pilgrimage and defence continued to draw people here. The enormous church expressed the significance of John. Its open plan now lets us read how worshippers moved, even though most of its roof and domes have disappeared.

Questions visitors ask

Is this John the Baptist’s basilica?

It is associated with the Johannine tradition of Ephesus, not John the Baptist. Explain the distinction.

Was Justinian’s basilica first-century?

No. Justinian belongs to the sixth century. The devotional association is older than the monumental building.

Are church and castle the same monument?

They share a hilltop landscape but have different functions and building histories.

Evidence and traditions

Some popular summaries confuse John’s identity or Justinian’s century. Do not repeat those errors. Keep later pilgrimage accounts separate from direct evidence for a burial.

Group handling

Explain gradients and exposure before entry. Gather on a robust permitted surface rather than fragile foundations. Check the castle’s current route locally. Choose a meeting point that is specific to the correct exit, and avoid making the first steep staircase the moment visitors discover the physical demands.
